One Librarian, one reference #1Lib1Ref 2020

In 2020, the Wikimedia Foundation is launching the fifth edition of One Librarian One Reference (#1Lib1Ref) which will be held from 15th of January to the 5th of February 2020!

This event invites librarians from all over the world to add a reference to the article of their choice on the online encyclopedia. Indeed, the Wikimedia Foundation estimates that if each librarian spent 15 minutes to add a source to an article with a " reference needed" banner, it would be possible to improve the reliability of 350,000 articles.

Why should Librarians get involved?

  • Because you will improve the quality of articles and their reliability on Wikipedia, and so improve access to information for library users.
  • Because you will contribute to the discovery of books, authors sometimes little known in specific fields.
  • Because this is an occasion for your users to learn about references and sources and encourage them to get themselves involved in Wikipedia.

Other gaps to fill?

Libraries all around the world have already been involved in #1Lib1Ref, and many (D.B. Weldon LibrarySt.Cloud State University LibraryWaterloo LibraryPenn State University Libraries) have also become involved in other wiki projects, particularly to promote the diversity of content on Wikipedia.
This includes the Gender Gap project (to promote female contents on Wikipedia), the representation of LGBT+ communities but also the development of content related to non-Western communities.
To promote knowledge sharing and the representation of different cultures and opinions, we are encouraging you to contribute!

What are the first steps?
Librarians can be individually involved in adding references, but you can also set up workshops or events on the subject to raise awareness and teach users how to source articles!
To edit references on Wikipedia yourself, you will find below the first necessary steps (also available here)
Step 1: Create a Wikipedia account in the language of your choice if you do not already have one.
Step 2: Select an article.
Step 3: Consult the footnotes with references and see if you can add a source that would cross-reference this or that information.
Step 4: Add your reference! (Here, some instructions to add a reference).
To organise an event with your community, feel free to consult this page with the organisation guide!

Samsung SPINNING Sero TV

One of Samsung's signature products of CES 2020 is a TV that automatically rotates between portrait and landscape -- and works with the iPhone

Rotating sero TV that resembles giant smartphone for the home. Samsung seems to want to rectify the latter by releasing a “millennial-focused” Smart TV.

Samsung introduced the Sero TV. Sero means "vertical" in Korean, and the trick to this TV is that it can rotate between portrait mode and landscape mode, so it's tailor-made for millennials and Gen Z, who watch a lot of vertical videos from YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok.

Also within that stand is a 4.1-channel speaker system, with 60W output - stats that make it a cut above your average screen in terms of audio power.

Selfie Type keyboard Futuristic Keyboard Using Front Camera

Selfie Type keyboard - Samsung Selfie Type - Futuristic Keyboard Using Front Camera
#selfie #SelfieType #keyboard #CES2020 #SamsungCES2020

How does Selfie Type work?

Selfie Type is a project of Samsung’s in-house idea incubator C-Labs and delivers a virtual keyboard to users with the help of an AI algorithm and a front-facing camera. No additional hardware is required to set it up.

It allows users to type without physically touching their device’s on-screen keyboard. How accurate is it with tracking keystrokes remains to be seen, but the demo video certainly looks promising.

An email being typed in the video suggests that Selfie Type will be released to Samsung users as an update. I’d wager a guess that the feature should be available to all current Samsung flagships on release, more so since all it seemingly requires is a front-facing camera. Details remain scarce, but Samsung has officially confirmed is that the tech analyzes finger movements coming from the front camera, and converts them into QWERTY keyboard inputs.

Samsung is officially demo Selfie Type at CES 2020. The demo video shows how the new keyboard input method works across phones, tablets, and foldables placed in a range of orientations. We also see it being used to type emails, notes, and text messages

The future of knowledge work : Predictions for 2020

The future of knowledge work : Predictions for 2020

1.0  Overview

Many people predict that knowledge work will be a significant contributor to the future global economy. (i.e.: Drucker, 1959; Davenport, 2005). One trend that will facilitate the rise of the knowledge economy will be increasing ubiquitous access to information. People all over the world will be able to access the information they need anytime, anywhere (Leake, 2008; Hoomen, 2005). This trend is already beginning with the escalation of smartphone shipments, and the millions of applications available for them (Anderson, 2009).
The Purpose of This paper aims to describe findings from a study of current leading edge knowledge workers and to discuss the challenges and issues that knowledge workers may face in 2020, as the world of work shifts into a knowledge economy.
This article is about the findings from the study of leading edge knowledge workers, and  uses the findings to inspire a discussion of the issues and challenges that future knowledge workers may face.

2.0  The descriptive  of the methodology

In this article, the author describe the Observations from leading edge knowledge workers focused to be discuss are:

Methods
We conducted two different ethnographic studies of a total of 43 mobile and remote workers. Mobile workers worked on the go - outside of a static office for at least 50 percent of their time, and remote workers worked from home
Key findings
Participants in our study were closely tied to their smart phones, often using their phone as the go-to device for the information they needed – even when they were working at home.
Need for integration and filtering
The most frequent task that mobile participants conducted with their phone was checking e-mail. Participants checked e-mail constantly during microbreaks while walking down the hall, during lulls in a conversation, or when stopped at red lights.
Infrastructure constraints. The finding that participants were tied to their smart phones points to participants’ strong desire to attain ubiquitous access to their e-mail and other information.
Struggle to stay digital. Despite the fact that participants were tied to their smart phones, they still struggled to stay digital

3.0   Evaluation

The  author  has adequately established The future of knowledge work: predictions for 2020. observations of mobile workers in today’s workforce highlight some of the challenges to knowledge work now and in the future. Many of the current challenges are being recognized and addressed. The following sections will take a closer look at issues and tensions regarding information management and knowledge work that will need to be resolved as we transition to a sustainable knowledge economy in 2020.

Information management (aka overload) and the knowledge worker
Our study results show that today’s knowledge workers face an overwhelming amount of information. Information is everywhere, comes in a variety of formats and media, is intertwined in work and home life and provides unique challenges to the mobile workforce. Information is the static, raw material that when applied and acted upon is transformed into knowledge, a distinction discussed in more detail later in this paper.

Overwhelmed by information
Along with the sheer proliferation of information content are the ever-increasing ways to access, store and share it. The term ubiquitous access has been used to articulate the goal that information is available anywhere, anytime delivered in a format that you desire.

Making sense and use of information
The ease of ready access to information does not address the problem of what to do with it once you have it.

Intelligent information integration
On  the foreseeable future, technologies will continue to advance, enabling the continuous flow of information to our technology, and fingertips at rates that exceed our ability to make sensible use of all of it.

Making information spaces visible. There will be a need for continued development and refinement of intelligent yet easy to use information integration tools that help knowledge workers make sense of information spaces and content.

Context-aware systems. The growing trend in context-aware applications that use location (GPS) information and inferences about the user’s situation, e.g., tasks, activities and schedule will continue to expand.

User-awareness and control. Context-aware systems rely on information provided by a combination of other systems, external sensors and users themselves.
Mobilizing for the knowledge economy
As we discussed at the beginning of this paper, the twenty-first century economy is a knowledge economy

4.0  Discussion on the broad  number of important tensions or opposing directional biases.

This broader consideration reveals a number of important tensions or opposing directional biases. This section describes three such tensions to stage additional opportunities for technology innovations in support of future knowledge workers and knowledge work.

The author describes three such tensions to stage additional opportunities for technology innovations in support of future knowledge workers and knowledge work.
Tension 1: information does not equal knowledge. Getting the right information to the right person at the right time and in the right format to support decisions or facilitate action has long been the primary objective of information technology.
Tension 2: knowledge is global, mobile and difficult to contain behind the firewall. In the anytime, anywhere world knowledge can no longer be sequestered behind the corporate firewall.
Tension 3: increasing knowledge-intensity is not reflected in today’s educational outcomes. Smarter products, solutions and services require a smarter workforce

5.0  Conclusion
The paper is grounded in observations of today's leading edge knowledge workers. Based on study findings, it predicts challenges that future knowledge workers will face and propose processes and solutions that can help knowledge workers to successfully overcome these challenges.

Knowledge Worker Infographic

Knowledge Worker Infographic

Knowledge Workers
“knowledge worker,” defines these individuals as “high level employees who apply theoretical and analytical knowledge, acquired through formal education, to develop new products or services”.
Peter Drucker, 1995 book Managing in a Time of Great Change,

Knowledge workers are those who acquire, manipulate, interpret, and apply information in order to perform multidisciplinary, complex and unpredictable work. They analyze information and apply expertise in a variety of areas to solve problems, generate ideas, or create new products and services.

KNOWLEDGE WORKER CHARACTERISTICS
These persons must be able to find, access, recall, and apply information, interact well with others, and possess the ability and motivation to acquire and improve these skills.

Possessing Factual and Theoretical Knowledge.
Knowledge workers are conversant with specific factual and theoretical information.

Finding and Accessing Information.
Knowledge workers must therefore know how to independently identify and find such material.

Ability to Apply Information.
Knowledge workers use information to answer questions, solve problems, complete writing assignments, and generate ideas.

Communication Skills.
Knowledge work is characterized by close contact with customers, supervisors, subordinates, and teammates.

Motivation.
Knowledge workers must become and remain interested in finding information, memorizing that information, and applying it to their work.

Intellectual Capabilities.
Knowledge workers must have the intellectual capabilities to acquire the skills

KNOWLEDGE WORKER SHORTAGE

The information society requires a highly qualified work-force.

The
fact that traditional blue-collar workers cannot acquire easily the knowledge and skills needed to become knowledge workers will create a shortage of these types of workers.

HIRING AND RETAINING THE KNOWLEDGE WORKER
In order to hire and retain knowledge workers, employers may offer higher salaries, attractive work environments, and continuing educational opportunities.

Employers take actions designed to attract and retain knowledge workers by creating a free-agent community, respecting knowledge workers as new bosses, and providing growth opportunities.

IMPROVING KNOWLEDGE WORKER PRODUCTIVITY
Knowledge worker productivity influences success in today's competitive work economy, and businesses are focusing on increasing this productivity.

THE WORKPLACE
Work-place arrangements range from traditional physical office space occupied by employees between the hours of 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. each workday to virtual office space which can exist just about anywhere.
Knowledge workers who work exclusively with ideas and information may operate in a non-traditional workplace situated anywhere that employees have access to needed computer and communication equipment.
